Using Skymarks

Occasionally, you will want to do more with your bookmarks and Skymarks is ready to help you make those tasks easy and fun to perform.

Synchronization

Although Skymarks synchronizes bookmarks automatically on a pre-defined schedule, you can do this manually at any time. In the minimized view, simply click on the "Sync" button to perform a full sync (This is also be done by right-clicking the Skymarks icon in the system tray when the application is hidden.)

Advanced sync options are available in the maximized client view. Click "Replace Server Skymarks" to overwrite the server's bookmarks with your local bookmarks. Click "Replace Local Skymarks" to do the reverse - overwrite the local bookmarks with those from the server.

During the synchronization process, other background checks are performed to ensure that the operation executes as it should and data integrity is maintained.

Sharing Bookmarks

Skymarks facilitates the sharing of bookmark folders with other skymarks users. When a folder is shared with other users, a copy of your folder is inserted in their bookmarks and this folder is kept in sync with yours.

To share a folder:

  1. Click on the "Share" menu button.
  2. Select the folder (or sub-folder) you want to share
  3. If the folder is not already shared, check the "Shared As:" radio button. You may accept the default share name or choose your own name
  4. Click the Save button
  5. Click the "Add" button on the side of the "Subscribers:" box to pop up the invite window.
    1. List the email addresses (or usernames) of the people you wish to invite to share the folder
    2. (Optional) Add a note to accompany the invitation
    3. Click "Send" to complete the process
Subscriptions

If you have subcribed to someone else's shared folder, those folders (and subfolders) will appear under a folder named "Skymarks Shares". These will be automatically updated on startup and every time a sync is performed.

NOTES:

  • You may enter a person’s email address even if they are not currently a Skymarks user. Skymarks will still send them your invitation to share your bookmarks, along with an invitation to register for – and download – their own Skymarks client.
  • You will be notified of your colleagues’ acceptance or refusal to share your bookmarks as soon as they have taken the appropriate action.
  • Skymarks shares can be renamed or removed at any point. Everyone in the group will be updated and notified when this action is taken.
  • Subscribers can be removed at any time. That person will be notified if this action is taken.
  • Currently Skymarks only allows “read-only” shares, which means that only the user that created the share can contribute to that folder. Full-featured sharing will be included in a near-future release.

Updating Preferences

The preferences that you set earlier during the First Run can be accessed from the “Prefs” screen and updated. You can also update your password from this screen as well.

NOTE:

Each interaction with the Skymarks server is authenticated using your username and password. If you use multiple clients and change your password from one of them, or change your password from the website, subsequent operations on the other clients will fail until you update the password on each client.

Sending Feedback

To send feedback to the Skymarks team use the feedback form by clicking on the “Feedback” button. There are two types of feedback. First, you may send general comments, suggestions for improvement or bug reports to the Skymarks team. Second, you can tell your friends about Skymarks. They will receive an email inviting them to join the Skymarks family with your optional message – if provided.

Checking Messages

The Skymarks server communicates with its clients via messages. Whenever a message is received, the message alert icon will blink. Clicking on this icon will open the message window where messages can be viewed and acted upon. The message icon will keep blinking until all messages are deleted.
